I was born in Anchorage on 2 July 1951. My father was a career soldier stationed at Ft. Richardson from 1948 - 1955. I hope to one day return for a visit. I remember as a little boy, before my father got military housing on base, we lived in a "shanty" type area within Spenard. My parents raved about Alaska. I think it is one of the best keptsecrets in the U>S>.

I came across your web page while researching for my technical writing course. I am a civil engineering major at Purdue University. My assignment is to "improve the quality of life" in Cordova (I chose Cordova on my own) with my engineering abilities. While I find it fascinating that there are no roads to Cordova, I have to pretend that easier access to Cordova is what is best for its people.

I'm an army brat who lived in Alaska as a child (we left in '83.) My Air Force husband just received orders for Elmendorf, and I am wondering more about the area. I never had to worry about driving in the snow or college classes as an eight-year-old, so if anyone has more specific info on what it's like for a young couple moving to Alaska it would be great.

My boyfriend and I recently visited Alaska in August. It was the best vacation we both have had. It is definetly what I call "God's Country" , Our favorite ride was the Seward Highwary. Every turn was so breathtaking and magnificent Being a New Yorker I was really suprised at how clean and friendly the people were. It's definelty the "Last Frontier". I'm really looking forward to visiting Alaska again.

I really enjoyed your collection of totem pole photos and the historical profiles you provided. However, I didn't see any photos of the recent works of Tsimshian carver, Stan Marsden. Have you seen "The Healing Heart" totem in Craig? It was raised in 1995 in memory of Stan's son. Another Marsden pole, the "Friendship Pole" was recently given to the elders of Hydaburg by Stan and his family. It stands in a prominent site at the Hydaburg totem park. Its really impressive, and may be a good addition to your collection of SE Alaska totem photographs. You can reach Stan at box 64 in Craig (99921) if you are interested in more history or photographs for your web site. Michelle Ridgway
