CAMP ISLAND DESCRIPTION

Camp Island Enterprises (CIE) is entertaining inquiries concerning the sale of their interest in 4.9 acres of fee simple land on Camp Island, a small 42 acre island located approximately twenty (20) miles east of Petersburg and 25 miles west of Wrangell. The island is situated at the mouth of LeConte Bay, which houses LeConte Glacier, and there is a continuous flow of icebergs in the area.

CIE owns the property in fee simple, the highest title one can own. Title insurance is available if desired. The remaining 37 acres is owned by the Federal Government. The island is included in a wilderness designated area and no known construction is planned nor any logging.

The island was primarily built up with sand from LeConte Glacier and the North Arm of the Stikine River. There is about eight to twelve inches of overburden on the top of the sand. Spruce and hemlock trees abound with the majority of them towering more than 50 feet in the air. The cabin is on the sheltered side of the island with the land around it being flat and covered with sand and moss. The property is subject to high and low tides ranging from -4 feet to + 20 feet. When the tide is low you can walk a quarter mile to the mainland!

CIE has built an eight person cabin, complete with electricity, hot water, propane cooking, indoor plumbing, and oil heat. It has a huge lawn around the cabin area, which is located on the sheltered side of the island. In case of emergencies there is a VHF on the island as well as one in the main boat, the 42' foot landing craft, "Islander". Help is a mere "phone call" away.

There is abundant natural resources around the island including halibut, salmon, dungeness crab, king crab, shrimp/prawns, and clams.

The island is at the mouth of LeConte Bay. LeConte Glacier, which is the fastest moving, southernmost salt water glacier in the northern hemisphere, is located 7.5 miles from Camp Island through this scenic fjord. In addition to LeConte Bay and Glacier, persons would enjoy boating up the north arm of the mighty Stikine River or cruising the multitude of sloughs.

Wildlife such as otter, seals (which calve in LeConte Bay by the thousands primarily to give birth on the ice, thus eliminating problems from predators), wolves, moose, and deer abound. Camp Island is located near the flyway of migratory birds, such as ducks, sandhill cranes, geese (Canadian and Snow), and swans, as well as having resident eagles nesting close by. In the spring there is the second largest concentration of eagles in the State of Alaska on the nearby Stikine River. Eagle surveys in the past have found as many as 4,000 birds along the river in spring.

Alaska Airlines offers commercial jet service to Wrangell and Petersburg year round. The Alaska Marine Highway also has year round service to these two communities where float plane and/or jet boat service is available to then take you to Camp Island.

Our group has owned this property since 1968, and we are about a 40 minute boat ride away from Petersburg and 50 minutes from Wrangell. This is an extremely unique facility and there would be ample room for expansion of additional facilities on the property.
