Sitka, once the capitol of Russian America, is situated on Baranof Island. Mount Edgecumbe, an extinct volcano, rises 3,200 feet above the community. Sitka has a population of 8,500 people. Attractions include: St. Michael's Cathedral, topped with magnificent copper domes and accented by gold crosses, was the first Russian church built in America. The Russian Bishop's house built in 1842, the Sheldon Jackson Museum, and the Sitka National Historic Park. All of them provide the visitor with a view into Sitka's Native and Russian History.
Accommodations are provided by 5 hotel/motels, 20 bed & breakfasts, one youth hostel, one fishing lodge, 23 restaurants, and a downtown shopping district. Access is by daily jet flights from Seattle, Anchorage, Fairbanks, and other major Southeastern Communities, by Alaska State Ferries, air taxis, and all classes of cruise ships. There is no road access to Sitka.
