Anchorage started out because of the need for a railroad to the interior of Alaska. The city's name came from the first Post Office opened there in May of 1915. Anchorage is Alaska's largest city with nearly one half of the states population living there. The city was incorporated in 1920. Anchorage's growth has been propelled by, the Alaska Railroad, the settling of the farming region of the Matanuska Valley, construction of Fort Richardson and Elmendorf military bases, discovery of oil in Cook Inlet between 1957 and 1961, discovery of North Slope Oil and the construction of the Trans-Alaskan Pipe Line.The March 27, 1964 earthquake caused millions of dollars of damage and a flurry of new construction.
Anchorage has about 75 schools, 160 churches and temples, a public library with 7 branch libraries, And the University of Alaska library. There are also about 50 hotels and motels and approximately 40 Bed & Breakfasts through out the area. Restaurants number about 330 with specialty dinning including Cantonese, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Mandarin, Mexican, Polynesian, Greek, German, Sicilian, soul food, seafood, smorgasbord and vegetarian cuisine.
There are more than 40 International and domestic airlines that serve the Anchorage area. There are 4 taxi companies, a local bus service, and several car and camper rentals.
