Michael J. Heney, builder of the Copper River and Northwestern Railroad, named Cordova. The town grew into a fish site and cannery site by 1889. In 1906 a Post Office was established. Cordova was incorporated in 1909.
The town became the railroad terminus and ocean shipping port for copper ore from the Kennecott Copper Mines near Kennecott and McCarthy. The town and railroad prospered until the mine closed in 1938.
Today, like many other coastal towns of Alaska, Cordova's economy is based on commercial fishing. This is also the home port of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Sweetbrier, and the Alaska Marine Highway Vessel M/V Bartlett. Cordova has 2 hotels, 2 motels, 8 bed & breakfasts, 12 restaurants, a laundromat, and several shopping areas.
