The fishing industry started most communities on Prince of Whales, but Thorne Bay was started by the Timber Industry. In 1953 Ketchikan Pulp had a lumber camp at Hollis but moved it to Thorne Bay in 1962. Located near the mouth of Thorne River the logging camp is a complete community. There are mess halls, bunkhouses and houses for the families that make Thorne Bay their home. There is a school for children from kindergarten to high school, a church, a movie theater, restaurant, store, snack bar, and a tackle shop. The camp is also connected by road to Craig, Klawock and Hollis.
