Petersburg is known as Alaska's "Little Norway" due to the traditional Norwegian celebrations celebrated there each year. The town was named for Peter Buschmann who established a sawmill there in 1899 and a salmon cannery in 1900. It also boasts the largest home-based halibut fleet in Alaska.
