Hydaburg is approximately 22 miles Southeast of Craig. It was founded in 1911 when several Haida village elders decided to consolidate for better educational opportunities. The villages were Klinkwan, Howkan, Kaigani, and Sukkwan. There were 139 residents in the new village and it was named Hydaburg after the Haidas.
Hydaburg did not get its first processing plant until 1927 when Far North Fisheries opened operations there. Several canneries operated and closed for the next 50 years.
Hydaburg is located overlooking Sukkwan Narrows with many new homes and a Totem Park that displays restored totems from the original villages where the residents originally lived.
Hydaburg is connected by road with the main Hollis-Klawock cross-island road which connects the Island to the Alaska Marine Highway System and the rest of Southeast Alaska.
